With simple tools and wire of various gauges and materials, students will learn the basic techniques of wirework and explore creative applications of wire working. During class, we will make a variety of useful and beautiful household objects, including hooks, candlesticks, bowls, jewelry, and trivets. Norwegian ryer were used for coverlets and provided protection and warmth at sea for centuries. Borrowing from a rya coverlet design in the Vesterheim collection, you will weave rya on a goose-eye twill background. The rya knots will not show on the non-pile side. Your weaving will be appropriate for a wall hanging or bench cover. There will be a materials fee of approximately $60. Students may bring or purchase wools for knots.
